If you've ever thought that your natural hair "just doesn't grow," I would argue that you just have trouble retaining length! Here are some ways to stop natural hair growth breakage and retain length:
1. Finger detangle
Ever since I switched to finger detangling a while back, I noticed a lot less breakage in the shower during wash day and when styling my hair. Finger detangling allows you to slow down and work through tangles rather than ripping through them with a comb. I’ve personally accepted that natural hair isn’t always going to be 100% detangled.
2. Prevent friction
Friction is when two objects rub together. When it comes to natural hair, the main culprits are our fingers and fabrics such as our clothing. Opt for satin hair accessories, try to keep your hair off of your shoulders, and only touch your hair with oil on your fingers.
3. Protective style
These are styles that keep our ends tucked away and protected. The key to protective styling is to continue moisturizing your hair while in the style you choose. Moisturizing is an ongoing process for healthy hair.
4. Add protein to your regimen
Hair is made of protein, and it is what keeps it strong. Even if you are protein-sensitive (like me), some protein is required. Opt for a protein-treatment or natural hair products with proteins in them.
5. Don’t pick out your hair (as much)
When I started my natural hair journey, I was so vicious with picking out my hair because I wanted volume! Instead, I would recommend taking the time to really separate your hair (with oil applied to your fingers of course!) to achieve the volume you so desire. Also, I like to flip over my head and lightly lift my hair at the roots.
What’s your best tactic for retaining length?
