Use This, Not That! (To Prevent Breakage)

Lately I made some changes in the hair tools I’ve been using to help prevent breakage, & I really noticed some results!

Let's get started!

Hair pins v Bobby pins

Hair pins are a great way to keep your hair in place without causing too much tension on your scalp. It’s also less likely to pull out your hair when you take them out.

Bobby pins still provide better hold, so I still use them if hair pins aren’t enough. Nonetheless, this alternative can save you from lots of breakage.

Claw clips v Butterfly clips

Butterfly clips have sharp teeth that can catch onto your hair very easily.

Claw clips have larger teeth with smoother edges that are less likely to catch onto your hair. Also, claw clips are easier to open and close. I find that butterfly clips are a bit stiff and can snap close when you least expect it & snag onto your strands.

Turbie Twist v Cotton towel

Cotton towels can dry out the hair and cause lots of friction. Also, the fibers can catch onto our hair and cause breakage.

I’ve found that the microfiber Turbie Twist towel works much better for me to dry my hair rather than a t-shirt, which is also a good alternative!

Snap clips v Bobby pins

Snap clips are easy to open and close in order to safely remove them from your hair without taking any hair strands with it.

I prefer the all black ones because they match my hair, but you can get creative and try some other colors to match your outfit for a cohesive look.

Silk scrunchies v Hair ties

Silk and satin help our hair retain moisture, and now there are silk scrunchies that can be used for the same benefit!

I like these ones that i found on Amazon. They’re a bit thinner, so it kind of resembles a hair elastic and aren’t super puffy-looking!

Silk-lined cap v Bonnet

If you decide to invest in a silk-lined cap, I don’t think you’ll regret it! The ones I own are from Grace Eleyae.

The elastic bands from traditional bonnets can rub at your edges and cause breakage throughout the night (I know this from personal experience, unfortunately)! The elastic bands on these caps are lined with silk, so you’re covered.

(Another alternative is to put a satin scarf under the bonnet to protect your edges!)

Hair hooks v Hair ties

This is definitely worth a try if you’re always running through hair ties! They’re also just so much easier to put on your hair for a top puff (I found these Cantu ones at Target!)

These are the tools that I recommend you switch to to help prevent breakage!
